Rewind is one of the Autobots who belongs to the group called Cassettes (since he transforms between his robot mode and cassette mode). He and five other Autobot cassettes: Steeljaw, Eject, Ramhorn, Grandslam and Raindance are carried in the tape deck of Blaster (who transforms into an AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player).

With his role as an Archivist, Rewind has an amazing capacity for data storage which he tends to use mainly for trivia and other information that others find useless (according to his Tech Spec).

The Generation 1 Rewind was released together with the Generation 1 Steeljaw in 1986.
